Hello!

Just a quick note to say HI to everyone who came by our table at the MCM this weekend. I had a bit of ill and was kinda incoherent and glaring at everyone, but you were all nice so hopefully it's okay! And nobody caught what I had. Thanks also to Claude and Dev and Jess and Joss and Thegirlsbehindus and Tom and Katie for totally putting up with my grog all weekend.

I'll also be at Thought Bubble in Leeds in a week or so. No new stuff I'm afraid, I'm still kickin' the crap out of Rockfall#3! Just trying to get as much cool stuff in there as possible, I think I've been "two thirds done" for the last three months. So hopefully when it's done it'll be six thirds awesome or something, maybe that's how it works.

Following on from Mark Pearce's lead, I went and got myself a Folksy account and chucked some comics on it! So if you wanna buy a comic and have me scribble in it (and probably all over the envelope too), check it out! I haven't had any orders yet, be the first! :D It's UK only at the moment I'm afraid 'cos the only way I can set it up for international orders is to charge a fortune, so I'm holding off on that until I find a way to charge what it actually costs to ship. ALSO! I've read some amazing comics lately, and I wanna share 'em with you.

First and foremost is Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore; it's been knocking around for a long while now, about as long as Bone I think, but for some reason I'd never heard of it until I got into his current series Echo, and delved into his old stuff. And it's awesome! Why have I not heard of it before? I thought I was into my indie comics, it's like knowing the Alps reasonable well and not noticing one of the tallest mountains. ANYWAY. It's about Katchoo, and her best friend Francine, who Katchoo is secretly in love with, despite her being in love with a male fleabag. They then meet David, who falls for Kachoo, and then they get hunted by the mob and have lots of fights, it's great. :D Terry Moore's artwork is stunning, the characters are written and drawn like real people with all the imperfections that entails and it's made it the best book I've read in YEARS. And the best thing is, there's 6 massive volumes of it and I have 4 more to go! :D Man, so excited. So yeah! If you haven't read it, check it out!

Second! Saturn Apartments! It's a story about Mitsu, a kid who wants to find out what happened to his dad who disappeared CLEANING THE WINDOWS ON THE OUTSIDE OF A GIANT SPACE STATION RING THAT ENCIRCLES AN UNINHABITED EARTH. And it's beautiful, real laid back and just lounges around in its futuristic setting, which is my favourite way for scifi stories to be. It's more about Mitsu fitting in, cats in spacesuits, and just...work, really. There is some mystery, and potentially some romance I guess, but I really liked the muddling through life feeling. There's no grand opera, just Mitsu and the things that happen to him. I wanna visit him and give him a perk up sandwich or something. But yeah, the art is great, way cuter than I expected for this kind of story. Highly recommended, again! :D

I also picked up Sky Doll! And I really like that too! Ok, so I'm a sucker for amnesiac robot girls trying to work out what their purpose in life is (Battle Angel Alita kinda left an indelible mark on my brain, like a barcode), but man that book's beautiful. Such a mash of styles, it's like western layouts with eastern art and disney expressions. Chuck in some religious totalitarian government conspiracies, boobs and a manic sense of humour and yeah, you got a pretty good book! mmm, euro-book :D

Finally I got Ryan Armand's Great! book this week! Man I hope it ends well, going through that whole rollercoaster again was tough XD but yeah, wicked book. :D

Yeah! That's whay I've been doing then. Stuff! :D Tomorrow I'm gonna do MORE stuff, probably put more books up for sale, do some comics, laze arouuuunnnnnnnd :D Oh and watch Spain win the World Cup of course. C'mon, Spain! I've got a fiver on ya! I'm playing in defence, #3, see if you can spot me! Cheer me on! :D

Also I just got my copy of Non-Repro (which Broomsquad is in!) and it's looking pretty sweet! We'll have some copies at the Japanese Art Festival :)

Cancelled Webcomix Thing table next weekend

Hi!

Yeah, I've had to cancel my table at the UK Webcomix Thing. So if you want a table, go grab it!! It's there!

But yeah, work has really kicked my ass over the last few months and I haven't been able to get anything ready, and rather than just sell the exact same stuff I was selling last year I'd rather not exhibit. To put this in context, I'm working now, and will be for another few hours, and this has been going on for getting on 3 months now, weekend included sometimes. Right now I'm in Macclesfield, near Manchester! That's like, a whole other planet for me! Crazy. It's not like I haven't done anything, Broomsquad will be out in the next few months in a magazine, and I've made headway on other stuff, but nothing's ready. So yeah, I'm bailing, and I'm totally gutted about it 'cos it was promising to be my favourite con, like, ever.

So! I'm still going! But just as a punter. :) Hopefully a combination of work cooling down in a few weeks and the shame of attending a con but not selling will propel me into producing a shitload of stuff, right? :D Yeah!

If you're going, seeya there! I'll be the one laughing at Claude for BEING STUCK BEHIND A TABLE FOREVER. :I

Broomsquad & Rockfall#2

Hi! Yeah! I've been up to stuff, for once, and this is what it is.

First off I've finished part one of Broomsquad, serial story that's running in Non-Repro magazine. It's about witches solving magical crimes and kicking the shit out of things. I like it! I don't know when it'll be out yet, but I'll post when it is. I've been talking about doing this for ages, so it's good to finally get something done about it. Witch SWAT! YEAH!

Also in preparation for the UK Webcomix Thing in London I've been working on Rockfall#2. Holy shit! It's a short one, but a good one I reckon. So far I've done 3/4 of a page out of about 16, so it's gonna be tough, but not as tough as doing a con a whole year later without a continuation of the story, so I'll get it done, deffo! :D People have been very nice about the first one so this year I'm getting right on that to try and make up for that year's gap. Not cool. I wanted to start earlier than like, now, but my day job has exploded (in a good way! :D) so I've kinda been putting it off. I'm typing this now at >9pm from work in my noodle break! :D But yeah, I'm tired of putting one thing off in favour of another so I'm doing both, in UNCOMPROMISING STYLE. So yeah, chances are at the Thing I'll be some kinda charcoal-coated husk, incapable of conversation and barely capable of respiration, but I'll be happy. :D Go go go!!

finally check out claude and elliwiny's Ebon Spire OCT comics, it's STILL awesome and it's on the last leg! One of them is on THIER last legs, but WHO?! Oh no!! Seriously guys, doing these comics in the quantity and quality that you have for the last year is downright freakin' HEROIC. :D

YEAH!!

I got some fanart from the awesome shape-throwin' pen of Will Kirkby! :D I've been a fan of Will's work since we met at Caption last year, so to get unsolicited art from him is such a great thing for me, I just keep squintin' at it. :D

I love Will's stuff, his art style is epic, he writes from the heart and I totally envy his drive and enthusiasm for drawing new stuff. I mean, his stuff is so distinctive you'd know it was Will if you only had like the top left corner of a panel. If there was something in the top left corner. I'm not sure I could get it from just the border. Right.

Anyway, yeah! Thanks Will! :D

Also, thanks to Paul for chucking me a link! I'm a massive fan of Freakangels (dude, Friday is FREAKANGELS day. :D) and Paul's art in general, so yeah, thanks man, I'm glad you liked it. :)

As for me, work's been mental this last few weeks (wor + MCM Expo + perparation pretty much wiped me out!) but hopefully I can get on with the next Rockfall very soon. I'm aiming to get it done by the Webcomix Thing in March! That's it! That's when! I can do it! :D I've got a... rough... plot... outline...

Caption was cool! got some wicked stuff. There are some really good books out at the moment, one of these days I'll write all about em. :D Talked to lots of people too, and ate a squid. I want to write more! But sleep is so strong!

Also I've been scanning in part 1 of the Sticks comic; I missed out an entire spread though, and didn't realise till just now and it's late and I need bed! 0_0 So that'll be out tomorrow evening, 9 pages hurrah! :D Heehee, I thought it was over quickly when I proofread it... I'm a terrible proofreader :D Then it'll be another part of about 9 pages next week, and then the end which is about 6 a week or so after that. Then I'm gonna look into toning it. :)

So yeah, comics tomorrow, and a Caption report. And maybe a long-overdue 176 report. yep!

Hey!

I've taken a week off work so I can pretend I'm a full-time comic artist. Took the weekend off to decompress a bit, and now I've shut myself in the shed at the end of my parents' garden for the week. I'm officially at the mid-point and I'm not THAT far off my timeline!! Go me!!

I'm working on Sticks, a few pages of which I posted a while back. I describe it as a post-apocalyptic ronin story set in Cornwall, but really it's just a kinda love-letter to those fighty mangas where people beat the phoo out of each other, so really it's just a fight. :D It's planned at 23 pages, and I had 5 before I started on monday. it's now thursday night/friday morning, and I'm at page 15 of pencils, up to page 10 inked.

Sticks was meant to be the antithesis of Rockfall; where that was all monsters, spaceships, asteroids and guns, this comic's more about bushes, trees, punchin', kickin' and tractors! Where Rockfall was straight lines and perspective, this is more about trying to get characters in shot, connecting with each other properly and drawing a ton of trees. It's great fun, and it's made me appreciate a little the simplicity of Rockfall's talking heads and easy-to-draw spacesuits and gunfights! :D

I find myself labouring over getting the fights right, every panel is a freakin' mission. I'm trying to avoid the cliche of

[shot of good guy punching- "i'm gonna hit ya!"]

[shot of bad guy getting hit -"owwww!"]

- style that comics often use, I'm trying to get both those actions in the same panel so it's more of a;

[good guy punches bad guy IN THE FACE!]

- kind of action. I dunno how easy it'll be to read, but there you go. I'm avoiding blurring bodyparts etc too, just showing what happens. My head's using Preacher's fights as a reference, trying to get that weight, grit and crunch that that book had, with some of Tony Jaa's wince-inducing thuds playing on the back wall of my skull. Awesome. That's what I'm aiming at, anyway. I'll post some stuffs when it feels ready to show.

So yeah, I gotta get crackin' if I'm gonna finish this before I go back to work on Monday, there's plenty of Thursday left yet! Thursday doesn't happen till the sun comes up! I'm hoping once all this fighty stuff is out of the way I can get back to some good ol' talking heads and some cheaty panels and claw some time back. I've also still got the cover to go, and the dreaded scanning & PDFing, but I'm hoping I can get that done in the week.. I'm not sure if it'll be done in time for Caption, but I'm gonna do my damnedest!

Yeah. That's what I'm up to. Wish me luck! :D I'm off to draw Sticks fighting a privet.

From Denmark! I was crashing at Phish's place eating his crisps, wrecking the place and drawing comics. :D We did lots! I'll be posting it over the next few days I think, I'm still a bit wrecked (I thought we didn't do so much, but memories of long trekkin' adventures stumble out of the back of my mind and I realise why I'm still knackered. My legs hate me!).

Ebon Spire is a, quite frankly GRUELLING comics duel being held on DeviantArt; 32 artists drawing comics of their character fight another artist's character, with the comic judged the best being classes as canon and the other being ELIMINATED. They're big comics too, each part is given 6 weeks to be completed in (I think) so they all end up being about 10+pages long. Everyone's bringing the best they have to offer, but two rounds in and our strange friend Claude TC is rockin' it!

It's Ewan, regenerative 70s quiff-wielding optimist! The last man alive vs everything! All he has is his duct tape and a radio-sword! Ewan! Claude! Ewan and Claude!! VS EVERYTHING!!!!! EVERYONE!!!!! ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!

He didn't have a website then, but he now has a blarrrg, right here! He'll be worth keeping up with I reckon, 'cos the guy just never stops drawing. He's drawing now, I can see him. :D I love Kit's stuff, so yeah, i'm proper happy I get to see more of it. :D

That's me, in it. It was for my sister's 21st Disney-themed party, which was awesome, everyone totally went the distance with the costumes and she had a great time! :D

Yeah! Started a new comic. I don't normally post comics as I go, but we'll see how this works out. It's not a Rockfall thing, it's another thing, a Post-Apocolyptic Triffid Ronin story set around about Cornwall. :D Note the thinner panel borders! Whoa! Stylistic adventure! :D

I'll be selling Rockfall again at this: 176 on Sat 27th june! It's open midday til late I think, and I think there will also be beer (tea at least), and dozens of talented creators and stuff, it's gonna be awwwweeesommmmmmmmmme :D

Sticks won't be ready for then though. C'mon, I just started it. :D

I've also been reading Claymore. I like it, it's a bit like the original Battle Angel Alita series, which I love, only with demons and swords instead of cyborgs and rocket-hammers.

It's awesome. As I was nearing the end I was blubbing like a schoolgirl and had to hide 'cos some people out the window saw me and I didn't want to be caught crying at a comic book. I remember checking it out for the art when it was out in singles and I never really stuck with it (I always forget to buy singles. I tried to collect Incognito by Sean Phillips & Ed Brubaker but it's already on issue..3? 4? When the hell did that happen?!), but IKG works fantastically as a BIG TRADE BOOK. Writing's great, the art's great, well worth whatever needs to be paid to get it. Yeah!!

Rockfall news; I still haven't built any new copies yet. I'm gonna rework it a bit, do a new cover and have it ready for 176 I reckon. I've had 4 copies in the comic shop for weeks now, I sold one! Which is great! :D Then Kit took in his beautiful Little Red Ronin comic and sold out in a few days. Damn! I need to get some chicks, in colour, on the cover. :D XD Selling at cons is much easier than selling in a shop I've decided, gotta up my game.

I might also have another comic for 176, but I really need to get my ass in gear for that so maybe not.

Hi! First off an apology; I'm kinda theming my website and journal around Rockfall, the scifi thing I finished a few weeks ago, but there's none of it online and there aren't any left to buy! I suck! So yeah, sorry about that. I have another 12-page Rockfall story I want to serialise online, so I reckon I'll soon be posting that. Sit tight! :D There are a few copies left in Chaos City Comics in St. Albans tho, if you're interested and local. :)

Another apology; I'm messing around with Journal stuff, so this is all gonna be bonkers around here for a wee while. I wanna use this as the front page of my website eventually so I'm kickin' it into shape! It hurts! ;_;but YEAH! Comics update! The UK Webcomix Thing went really well, sold loads of comics and met loads of cool people! I'm totally planning on highlighting the comics I bought and loved, there were a lot! :D I'm gonna try and do that this weekend.

The next comic I'm working on isn't Rockfall, it's another thing, and if I've spoken to you over the last few weeks about what it is, it isn't that. But it's gonna be awesome, and finished in time for 176 on the 27th June in London. Tho I haven't written it yet. O_O aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I've been inspired by Two Lane Blacktop, and while it's not really gonna be like that I'm gonna be channelling its awesome. :D

Finally, Kit Wallis was exhibiting with me at the Thing the other week, but his site has stopped working! noo! I'll post where when it's back! It should be on www.kitwallis.com. In the meantime any comments here will get to him; he sits on my left at work, so any comments or physical abuse left here will be duly passed on, you betcha :D

Anyway. Back to the great CSS battle. POW!

Sorry! no art. My sketch-a-days have fallen by the wayside a bit, not only because of timmy mallet not being cool anymore, but also because I have been working on COMICS. I wanna keep comics a secret until they are pretty much done because of the naracisstic way my brain works; if I post it now, I might think I've finished the entire comic, and that's all wrong! So I'll keep it under wraps until I'm certain the momentum will keep me going. Whtev, it's cool stuff so far; the layouts so far are pretty standard, but hopefully I can develop that as I go. Anyway. Comics! I reckon I've got a good hour left in me yet! :D :D

Sketchy update

YEAH! I've been keeping up with my sketchadays!

Here is todays, inspired by the concept of Wild Zero, featuring GUITAR WOLF! And zombies! While the film is probably nothing like this (I haven't seen it yet! I'm too scared to see it by myself. I think the awesome would be too much for one person to bear alone).. it..should be? Maybe I should do that in future, just read a synopsis of a film I haven't seen and then just draw it.

And now a CUT! Below the cut is the other scribbles I've done before now but after then.

Sketches!

I'm trying out that "sketch a day" thing that I kinda seem to always do about this time of year.

I'm trying to work out how this comic should look, it's a lot more black and white than I'm used to so I'm kinda still feeling my way around it. I'm getting closer to what I want ("heavy blacks with some crosshatching but not TOO MUCH" is the style I'm more or less looking for. Like a more scratchy, oppressive Bone I guess!)

But yeah! One of these was done yesterday, the one with the head on the stick was just now. Kinda suffered a bit for a lack of 0.05 laser-accuracy microscope pen; Kit kindly lent me his for when I was doing Sticks' face, but when I got around to the background he wasn't around anymore so I made do with a 0.5 mm. Yeah, PEN GEEK.

Not sure about her cut-off shoulders longsleeve thing here (also in better context here). I can't decide if it looks cool or if it looks contrived and impractical. It's just not NINJA. But with all the sticks and stuff it kinda breaks things up a bit, so I dunno. Wotev :D

Anyway. Comics. I found 8 pages of pencils of a short Rockfall story HIDDEN my laptop, between the keyboard and the screen! Which goes to show when I last picked up my guitar I guess, AGES ago. 'cos I put my guitar thru my laptop. Like ya do. :) So yeah, when I've inked that I'll post it, it's pretty cool. I'm also working on a Sticks / Idyllic story which I'm making up as I go along, which I'm posting up as I do it over at deviantart. I'll whack it up on my website and link to it from here when I'm finished.

Also, I'm going to Leeds thoughtbubble thing! It's only a 500 hour drive! It'll be FUN!!

So yeah. Done!
